We've had to stay in Hazard for a few days....the generator on the RV needed its first oil and filter change. However, we noticed the morning we were bringing it in, that the generator shut itself off. So we let them know of the problem.
We were hungry and were hoping to find a Waffle House. The service guy at Cummins, Scott, suggested Hazard's version - the Huddle House. Food was good, but the weird thing was that they allow smoking in the place - felt like I went back in time!
One of the waitresses there, Christina, got talking with us and she just loved the idea about going across country. Maybe when her daughter's older (only 2 now), she'll get a camper and head on out! What she'd really like to do though is have one in Hawaii to just wander from beach to beach. Hope she will realize that dream someday!
Back to the service center. They changed the oil/filter but couldn't find anything wrong with the generator.
So we headed back to Walmart for a second night there. As I'm driving back in the jeep, the brakes feel weird and I realize I'm not stopping too well. I thought it was because I'm used to air brakes, but Greg checked it out...the brakes were messed up. I call a jeep dealer in Hazard that was just about to close and Scott (yes, another one!) said I could bring it there first thing in the morning. I check out google maps to see where they are...right across the highway from Walmart! How cool is that!
Well, then it's getting late and we need to run the generator to keep the fridge on. It shuts off again. And again. And again. And Greg checks the oil - no oil. We call THOR (mfgr) and leave a message. They call back a couple of hours later and say they will call the service center we went to and make sure it is taken care of...tomorrow.
This morning I go to the Jeep place and Greg heads to Cummins. A vacuum hose broke on the jeep so they replaced it and everything was good (and under warranty - yay!).
Around 9:30 I head over to where Greg is. They say the error codes indicate there could be a problem with the fuel pump, and the generator takes more oil than what's listed. So we stay there...until 4:30.
I was grateful they had a soda machine and a pop corn popper! AND they had a TV. So while Greg spent the entire day on the phone for work, I slept (cushy leathery couches) or watched all these old western TV shows! The Big Valley and the High Chaparral! Never saw them before!
The fuel pump is replaced, more oil is put in and they run the generator for about an hour and it doesn't shut down so everything was good (and under warranty - yay again!).
The people working there were very nice - many of the repair guys stopped by to ask about our trek. One guy has always wanted to do that, but couldn't bike ride because of his diabetes. But he was thinking of maybe getting a Gold Wing motorcycle for him and his wife in the future. We hope he will plan and go someday! Greg was saying how Kentucky back roads were nice but the dogs come after him! This guy was saying they did that to him too, when he used to ride a motorcycle years ago. He was funny, he said "I apologize for the dogs".
Then before we leave, the main guy that worked on the RV explained to us about getting info online for future reference, and asked us about where we were heading next. When we told him and Scott about the campsite we were going to go to, they said it would be difficult to get to with our RV and suggested a different more easily accessible one - we had to backtrack a little, but it worked out great!
Carr Creek State Park in the town of Sassafras (love that name!)
