The morning was cool and quiet as
Greg got an early start.
I was on my own today...connecting up the jeep, winding my way out of town and stopping to get diesel fuel.
I'm beginning to think God is trying to break me from the "princess factor". By the time I get through hooking up the jeep, my hands are covered in grease and the shower I had taken is just a memory with no evidence to support it! It's definitely "toughening" me up! Not necessarily a bad thing!
It takes a while to "work out the kinks" to get the jeep in gear...since the ground wasn't level I couldn't stop it from rolling once I had put the transmission in park and the transfer case in neutral, so I had to maneuver the RV a bit and push the jeep into a better position.
Once on the road, the GPS was telling me to make a left onto a dead end...it USED to be the way off the island, but no more! So I circled the tiny streets of Chincoteague for a while, was amused by the ducks "as they scurried"...
Pulled into a hotel parking lot and checked the map Jenny had given us, and duh, of course, the road off the island was out of town a bit.
On to the refueling. I rarely use self serve (princess) and so I pull in hoping to get close enough to the fuel thingy (yeah, the lady inside the gas station laughed). Stood there for a long time - the fuel tank is huge! 90 gallons! I was able to go around the back of the station to get on the road again. Whew!
Then it was smooth sailing for the rest of my trip...
Unfortunately, Greg's ride was a little different than mine - he had to ride in several rain squalls. I didn't have any rain. Just as he was pulling into Walmart,
the rain down-poured again and we hustled to get the bike dried and covered up until tomorrow...
From what I've read, about half of the Walmart stores across the US allow free overnight camping in their parking lots for RVs. Apparently this started in the early days of Walmart because the founder, Sam Walton was an RVer himself and wanted to do something for the RV community. We certainly appreciate it!!
So Princess got her hands dirty and had to pump her own gas in the gas thingy? You know I'm lovin this right? Have a safe trip today and watch those storms all over the map.
ReplyDeleteLOL!! Thank you - I got my chuckle for the day!
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I've been praying for Greg's safekeeping. Weather-bug and Weather.com are showing rain, day after day this week, but he's determined!
Mom, you are too cute. You don't like to pump your own gas!?! How have I never known this? Well this trip will certainly change the princess theme for you. You're a traveling girl now! :)
ReplyDeleteP.s. - on one of our recent climbing/camping expeditions the guys Sara and I were with decided that I am Not a lady, due to me lack of showers and talking about whatever comes into my head. And I was like, 'Guys, we're camping and climbing for days straight in the middle of the wild of Kentucky... there are not ladies here, only women. Strong, capable, get-your-hands-dirty women.' Welcome to the sisterhood. :)
Lol. You da best!
