July 31, 2013 - Just Passing Through

Can't believe it's the end of July...the past is beginning to blur and places we've been to are fuzzy memories. Glad I've done this blog or it'd be gone forever!!

Believe it or not...this town is Happy!  Check it out Madeline!

Know what you're all thinking....no...I didn't stop in and buy any!!

Went to the Appalachian Artisan Center in Hindman.  It had local crafts - interesting things.  The pieces made from wood were exquisite.  There was this one goblet that had two rings also made of wood wrapped around the stem.  It was very expensive, otherwise it would presently be in the RV!

This was in a window next door to the center.

The road I had parked on is one way.  So I head out in that direction...and this very small one lane road starts heading up a hill, houses to the edge on one side and it just, lol, drops off on the other!  So I see this little space in front of someone's driveway that I can do a Y turn.  Head back down (thank goodness no one is coming up the other way!), dogs parking, chasing, and I finally see another way out.  The roads in these towns get very hilly, very tiny, very fast!

As I find my way out of town, I see another part of the Artisan Center - a music shop!

But it was too late to check it out - I had to head to the spot Greg and I were going to meet at.

Stopped to talk to Greg and these lil pups show up (they're everywhere!). The jeep is blocking them from seeing Greg so they didn't chase him!

He decides to continue on even though the fog is starting to roll in
and it's beginning to rain...

...at the end of the ride.

On our way back to Carr Creek...

...Hi Jeff!

Stopped at an IGA to get some milk and as we were leaving saw the fog on the hills...

July 28-30, 2013 - The Last Few Days

Along the road...from Pippa Passes to Hazard

We've had to stay in Hazard for a few days....the generator on the RV needed its first oil and filter change.  However, we noticed the morning we were bringing it in, that the generator shut itself off.  So we let them know of the problem.

We were hungry and were hoping to find a Waffle House.  The service guy at Cummins, Scott, suggested Hazard's version - the Huddle House.  Food was good, but the weird thing was that they allow smoking in the place - felt like I went back in time!

One of the waitresses there, Christina, got talking with us and she just loved the idea about going across country.  Maybe when her daughter's older (only 2 now), she'll get a camper and head on out!  What she'd really like to do though is have one in Hawaii to just wander from beach to beach.  Hope she will realize that dream someday!

Back to the service center. They changed the oil/filter but couldn't find anything wrong with the generator.

So we headed back to Walmart for a second night there.  As I'm driving back in the jeep, the brakes feel weird and I realize I'm not stopping too well.  I thought it was because I'm used to air brakes, but Greg checked it out...the brakes were messed up.  I call a jeep dealer in Hazard that was just about to close and Scott (yes, another one!) said I could bring it there first thing in the morning.  I check out google maps to see where they are...right across the highway from Walmart!  How cool is that!

Well, then it's getting late and we need to run the generator to keep the fridge on.  It shuts off again.  And again.  And again.  And Greg checks the oil - no oil.  We call THOR (mfgr) and leave a message.  They call back a couple of hours later and say they will call the service center we went to and make sure it is taken care of...tomorrow.

This morning I go to the Jeep place and Greg heads to Cummins.  A vacuum hose broke on the jeep so they replaced it and everything was good (and under warranty - yay!).

Around 9:30 I head over to where Greg is.  They say the error codes indicate there could be a problem with the fuel pump, and the generator takes more oil than what's listed.  So we stay there...until 4:30.

I was grateful they had a soda machine and a pop corn popper!  AND they had a TV.  So while Greg spent the entire day on the phone for work, I slept (cushy leathery couches) or watched all these old western TV shows!  The Big Valley and the High Chaparral!  Never saw them before!

The fuel pump is replaced, more oil is put in and they run the generator for about an hour and it doesn't shut down so everything was good (and under warranty - yay again!).

The people working there were very nice -  many of the repair guys stopped by to ask about our trek.  One guy has always wanted to do that, but couldn't bike ride because of his diabetes.  But he was thinking of maybe getting a Gold Wing motorcycle for him and his wife in the future.  We hope he will plan and go someday!   Greg was saying how Kentucky back roads were nice but the dogs come after him!  This guy was saying they did that to him too, when he used to ride a motorcycle years ago.  He was funny, he said "I apologize for the dogs".

Then before we leave, the main guy that worked on the RV explained to us about getting info online for future reference, and asked us about where we were heading next.  When we told him and Scott about the campsite we were going to go to, they said it would be difficult to get to with our RV and suggested a different more easily accessible one - we had to backtrack a little, but it worked out great!

Carr Creek State Park in the town of Sassafras (love that name!)

July 27, 2013 - Thought We'd Ask

We stopped at the Visitor Center on our way out of Breaks - they record all the TransAmerica bicyclists that pass through.  So Greg wrote up his thoughts about the 76 trail and about Virginia in general.  They give all the the bicyclists a commemorative pin. (sorry it's so blurry!)

We were looking at the brochures and they say this place is called the "Grand Canyon of the East".  So we asked a couple of park rangers about it and they said we should go check out the Towers Overlook....

We are SO glad we asked!!

With a fond farewell to Virginia, we headed off to Kentucky...

Here we go again...I have to say...I don't mind the crooked roads with the jeep so much...but with the RV, it kinda freaks me out!

Cool bridge...

There was a lot of construction and at one point there was no way for me to turn onto this highway going west, so I had to go 10 miles east and turn around to get back on the highway.  Saw this...I don't know exactly what was going on here, if it was naturally like this or they are chipping away at it.  Looked like a Mayan temple!

Parked the RV at Walmart in Pikeville...
...and took the jeep to catch up with Greg.

Later on we went food shopping...I've never seen these at home!
And the biggest tubs of ice cream ever!
Rainy night.  Have to get an early start tomorrow.  We have to be in Hazard by early Monday morning to have the RV serviced (oil change, etc.).  I'm hoping we can find a church further down the road, that has a Sunday night service...

July 26, 2013 - Last but not Least

Our last day in Virginia!  Greg was off to do the hairpin road ride (prayers were with him!). There was very little traffic, so it went well!
But I was sure glad when he got home!

On my way back to camp after dropping Greg off, I had passed a logging company...
You certainly don't see this on Long Island!

Stopped at a gas station market to get milk (grocery stores are few and far between out here).  As I sat in the jeep before I left, gazing up, saw this...

The pic just doesn't portray it.  The hill was really very high, I must have zoomed in.  And when I looked up at it, I actually got dizzy!

I must say, I'm quite fond of trees!
