August 6, 2013 - Horse Country

We were so close!  Ready to leave the area and head west....then Greg notices a lot of water on the ground.  He checks inside the compartment and discovers the fresh water pump is busted and leaking water everywhere!

I get on the phone to Thor (I'm surprised I don't have the phone number memorized by now!) and they say it's probably an RNR (?).  He laughs and says the lingo they use kicked in - Return aNd Replace!  He was ready to ship it to us until I explained about our trip and that the next stop planned was a Walmart.  So he helped me find a service center for Thor RVs - in Lexington, just a half hour away.  Said they usually have them in stock (mmm, sounds like this is a common problem!).

So I call and the lady on the phone says she'll go talk to the technician. He says come on in!  We drive up there and are greeted by a nice gentleman, Frank - kind face, white beard, white shirt and a sun hat on!  You'd never see a technician dressed like that in NY! He had plenty of the pumps in stock, but would look everything over and check it out.

It seemed like less than a half hour, he was done.  Replaced the pump.  We talked for a bit and then were on our way!  (warranty repair again - yay!)

Since it was getting later in the afternoon, we decided to stay in town.  I had read that this was horse country...checked AllStays - an online website we use to find campsites - great tool to have...and called the Horse Park Campground.  They had a site we could have for the night!

Only had to drive about 5 miles and we were there!  Ate dinner then realized it was still early enough to wander around.   Hopped into the jeep and we headed for the actual Horse Park around the corner.

The brochure said everything closes after 5, but we discovered that was just for the touristy part!

We first came upon many parking lots filled with empty horse trailers...so they had to be out and about SOMEwhere!

Then as we drove around we began to see more and more horses...this place is huge - 1200 acres, home to many breeds of horses.

We were able to drive around by the stables...
...and began to see riders...

There were indoor...

...and outdoor arenas...

...where horseback riding competitions take place...

And tonight was just one of those nights!!

We followed the loud speaker to the...!!

The proud moms looking on...wow, does that take me back!  When my daughter was 6, she started horseback riding lessons.  Here were these huge horses towering over her and she would just take them by the reins and lead them to and from the stable for the lesson!  (they terrified me!)

I remember at one of the first group lessons, they wanted the girls to give their horses a nudge to move...lol...well, she gives her horse more of what you'd call a kick!  The horse takes off running down the arena and stops dead in its tracks right before the fence!

She flew off, up and over the horse's head, and landed head first on the ground!  Thank God she had a helmet on!  But I screamed so loud from way across the arena that all the other horses bucked and started running all around!  One of the teachers ran over to me (as others were getting my daughter back up on the horse), and told me to smile and say encouraging words as she passed by.  Inwardly I was freaking out!!  But I did as suggested!

She took it all in stride!  And continued lessons well into her teens! (of course I immediately took her to a chiropractor that day just to make sure everything was okay!) She just loved horses, even went to horse camp for a week at the local stable, and did competitions where she won 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and other ribbons!  My horse whisperer...

We then went back to the jeep and explored some more...

Props galore!

Wandered into this weird area with large wooden animals...props of yesteryear?!

 The squirrel's cute...

Miniature log cabins...

Pristine landscapes filled with Kentucky bluegrass...
Well....mostly!

This was the entrance to the Horse Park's veterinarian's home, and as we stopped to take a pic, the horses got all excited...they started to run, like they were going to race us up the driveway!

And as we begin to head out, we see the US Pony Finals competition has ended for the evening...the riders have dismounted....

...and the moms are busy giving the horses baths!!
