August 24, 2013 - On the Road to Missouri

Before leaving Illinois, I passed through the town of Chester, which apparently is a pretty wild town, as Greg can attest to.  But it was also the home of E. C. Segar, the creator of Popeye!
It is a BIG thing around here!  There's a trail of sculptured characters throughout the town, an annual Popeye Festival the weekend after Labor Day - with contests, a parade, talent shows, a picnic and more, and fun stores - one I saw was "Spinach Can Collectibles"!

Then I headed to the bridge to go over the Mississippi River to Missouri!  To the left in this pic is the Popeye Memorial Park entrance...

Entering Missouri!

Ol' Man River...

Greg was just back a ways and our meeting place was just past the bridge so I got to sit and look out at the vista...

Then we went on our way to a state park campground, unaware that things would take a different turn!

It got very dark where we were driving - no lights - no anything...and we had to turn onto MO-H.  Yeah, they name their roads by letters of the alphabet.

We're driving along and see a sign saying the bridge is out.  We assume there is a detour....the moral of the story is...never assume!  So here we are, on this tiny road and pull up to this!

Greg gets out with a flashlight to see if there is another way out...nope!

So we take a look at the map (thank God for online maps!) and see there's a road we had passed that we can BACK UP to, and turn around!

We unhook the jeep.  Get out our ham radios.  And begin to back up. Jeep first - easier to see behind me, and easier for the RV to follow the headlights of the jeep.  We joke back and forth on the radios.  Lol - I was actually having fun doing this - DEFinitely an adventure tonight!  We probably had to back up about half a mile, then I pivoted the jeep so Greg would have light on this gravel road to back up onto.

I check the time, remembering the state park campground closes its gates at 9pm.  It's 9:10 and we are no wheres near it.  So off we go to the Perryville Walmart!  Call them to ask if we can stay the night.  No answer.  We get there and they are open, yay!  I go ask a manager - she was so nice, and said sure! Just park over near the water tower!  So we settled in and called it a night!
