Leaving Bardstown, just thought the wood design on this house was neat...
I don't know why I get such a kick out of this, but as I was traveling south, the GPS showed my current time as 2:19 and my ETA as 2:10!
Hey Scott! I'm going back to the future!
(more fun than just thinking I changed time zones!)
I turn off I-65 and see this!
So outrageous!
In college, totally unrelated to my major, I thought I'd take a class called Ancient Life...all about dinosaurs...just loved it! It was so fascinating, I read and researched everything I could get my hands on!
Probably stems from a book I read as a kid. I took it out of the library so many times, the only name on the sign-out card was mine! Just wish I could remember the title. It was about these cave explorers who went into a cave and came out on the other side into this world of dinosaurs. I'm thinking it was called "The Forgotten Valley" or "The Lost Valley" or something like that. Haven't been able to find it anywhere...someday I hope to...
So I get to our next campground, Singing Hills (how can I resist a name like that?!) and meet Beth. So friendly!! She and her husband Eldon, are the owners and live right behind the office! She gave us a great spot 75ft long so there was plenty of room to pull in, which is always a plus in my book! I got a sheet of all the best spots to visit in town, including places to eat, the best fudge shop and more! She also invited us to her church tomorrow!
On my way to meet Greg, I see fields of...
...soy beans!!
On this wonderful country road I see a horse and buggy approaching. They had them in Bardstown and I didn't get a good pic of one so I thought great, I'll get a pic of this one...it was so far away and unbeknownst to me until they were passing by, it was an Amish
couple...so their faces have been obscured.
Finally I arrive at Lincoln's Birthplace!
Talked to the ranger, Sharon. She explains that the park will only be open for a while longer and I start telling her about how Greg will be arriving soon and what he's doing and she thought that was just so great! We had such a nice chat.
Marie, she reminded me of you!
Took a look at the displays in the museum first.
I agree!!
Then headed to the site.
The reconstructed log cabin dating to the 19th century, is in a memorial building, that you take steps up to, each step representing a year of his life - 56 in all. The cabin is very similar to the original one Lincoln was born in.
The memorial building reminded me somewhat of the Lincoln Memorial in D.C. As I took each step, I pondered on the short span of his life. He's one of my favorite presidents. I would've liked to sit and talk with him...
The words on the building say "Here over the log cabin where Abraham Lincoln was born, destined to preserve the Union and free the slave, a grateful people have dedicated this memorial to unity, peace and brotherhood among the states".
The extension on the one side of the cabin was for the fireplace.
Such humble beginnings for such a great man.
Greg!
A few months before Lincoln was born, his family moved here to "Sinking Springs"...his father paid $200 for 348 acres of land!
The farm's name came from a spring on the property which emerged from a deep cave...
How cool is that?! To stay in a log cabin like Abraham Lincoln's!
Before we leave, we are greeted by Sharon who is about to close the gates for the evening. Found out she went to Potsdam too!! That was just so cool! (I love surprise gifts like that!) And she did her masters at Plattsburgh! She is a ranger here but her home is in Florida. And when she's in her home state, she works at Animal Kingdom! We told her we haven't been there yet, but when we do go, we'll stop by! We also talked some more about our adventure and she was so happy to get our "blog card"! Hope we see her again!
We decided to take the back roads "home"...
...the best way to see the country!
Kathy! More quilt designs!!
Ah...peaceful tranquility!
After a brief trip out in the evening to get food, we come home to Singing Hills...
