Later on in the day...
The water was sparkling like diamonds...reminded me of a place we go to at home, to look out on the water...
SO curious as to what is over the edge!!
This is all we could see!!
10th - Onward to Chanute...
I'm hoping this is the only twister we'll see!!
Stopped in a parking lot in St. Paul to answer some texts and this was across the street...
I've been seeing the name Neosho here and there and was curious...it's of Indian derivation meaning "clear or abundant water". There are nine springs in the city and they were an important part of the early development of the area.
Almost to the campground and I see "the sign"....ROAD CLOSED! Stop at the intersection, emergency blinkers on...and think. Can't go forward north, can't turn around, road to the left is gravel (never good) and a road to the right. I wave the truck behind me to pass and decide to ask her for help. She's not from the area - on route to her sister's house. She pulls over and calls her sister! Turns out the road is closed because the bridge is out. We talk for a while. Her sister said the best bet is to turn around and go back a ways and turn west to a main road. I thank her and she goes on her way.
Well, lol, I try to turn around...made three corners, but the forth...nope...just can't do it - or I'd wind up in a ditch! So my only option is...you guessed it...the gravel road! I slowly start down it...have to go over a railroad track that peaks in the road, thankfully the RV didn't bottom out! The GPS is telling me to turn, well, basically onto the tracks, so that's no good!
Off in the distance I see a car flying towards me, dust clouds billowing behind it. Wave them over. Ask the two teens in the jeep if I can continue on this road and get to the main highway. Yes! I thank them and drive on...(another adventure!).
Arrived at Sante Fe RV Park in Chanute. Nice area...there were people everywhere playing softball games, enjoying the summer weather. The park allows RVs to stay 2 nights free of charge! And they supply electric and water hookups too! Plus we discovered that the town of Chanute also supplies free WiFi...how cool is that?! Saves us a bundle!
Greg did 62 miles today! (He had to go an alternate route too!)
11th - God bless America
As we were finishing up breakfast this morning...we hear...THE ALARM!! (I had been checking the tornado alert websites and there hadn't been anything on them!) We go outside and it's a clear beautiful day. A guy from another camper thought maybe it was in honor of 9-11. But it goes off again. So I call the local police and she tells me every Wednesday morning they do a test of the tornado alarm system. Feeling grateful...
We pack up and both head out from the campground. Along the road in Chanute...
Didn't think a mirage could be captured in the photo, but it was!
Stopped at a rest area to wait for Greg...
The road at night on our way to Eureka...
I could get used to waking up to that view !!! Hey you know I think Copiague, means something like clear water, or good water too !! That's funny. NO TORNADOES !!!
ReplyDeleteHa! Today as I was driving and seeing this expanse of sky...to the right were these clouds that looked like they were swirling in a circle and it was dark! It was freaking me out a little! But it was just stormy weather, thank God!! Especially since Greg had just started out and was miles behind me!
