Met a nice couple a few "doors" down. She had forgotten to bring the cover for their pop-up canopy tent, so she was using the frame to drape clothes to dry. Ingenious. They also had all their bikes in a circle around the site. Apparently the "wild" horses are just that! They will wander through the campsites looking for food! They especially like coolers and will bust them open with their mouths! One person told them, a horse grabbed a can of Pepsi out of the cooler, lifted it up it the air and drank it!!
The signs at the ranger booth say "Don't worry about mosquito bites, watch out for horse bites!" They advise not to feed or pet the horses!
Leaving Assateague, I get a little bit better shot of these whimsical looking trees...
Didn't stop here but this town looks interesting. Found out it was the site of the 19th century Nassawango Iron Furnace where they smelted iron ore gathered from the nearby bog. Once a month they have archeological digs that you can be part of. I may have to return here someday!! Would love to go on a dig!
Along the route to Chincoteague, I discovered something that seemed out of place but was so cool!! (sometimes I'm such a kid). NASA & NOAA have this wild array of satellite dishes. I felt like I was in the movie Contact! Just looked it up online and they are launching two rockets to study a global electrical current called the dynamo which sweeps through the ionosphere...tomorrow! At 9:30am! They are also building a huge weather satellite that will be used in space - it's called GOES - it was mind-blowing. Could only get a few quick shots. Hope to get more tomorrow...
Onward to Tom's Cove Campground where we will be staying for a few days...
