August 25, 2013 - Meet Me in St. Louis

In the morning, checked Allstays and saw that Perryville Campground was just up the road...so we are now staying there!

We looked at the route we'll take coming back home, mostly Route 40, and it doesn't pass through St. Louis...so we decided to head north to The Arch!!

Sorry Mom, wish I could have called you and sung "Goin' to Kansas City", but it's just too far from here!

We see the arch!  It's so high!!

As soon as we got there we were snapping pictures like crazy but I felt, lol, a bit dizzy looking up at it!!   Found out it's higher that the Washington Monument!

It's so sleek and beautiful...
At some angles, it almost looks 2 dimensional...

Looking straight up!

And this is what's at the top...
See those tiny little dashes??

That's where we're going!

We only had to wait about 5 minutes and we began to wind our way to the tram.  It felt like we were going on a ride at Disney!
The lady tells us to stand in front of door 5...

...and then it opens!!

It barely fit 5 people and the ceiling was so low!! (bumped head!)  Felt like I was in the 2001 Space Odyssey movie!
Open the pod bay doors, HAL...

We slowly made our ascent.   I tried to breathe slowly.  Lol.  It was a very small pod!
And finally we are at the top!   It was a hazy day but we could see pretty far!
                      A close up!

The Cardinal's stadium...

               Another close up!
They have riverboat rides you can go on!

The Old Courthouse...was used for federal and state back in the 1800's...

This was a door on the floor...
...at the top of the arch!
       (What?? To go where exactly??)

You actually had to lean across the angled "wall" to look out the windows.  Kids could climb up there to look down!
It was fun!  Headed back down, and there was lots more stuff to see!

This was a brick mural featuring "Pioneers of Light" - photographers of the 19th century.

Another brick mural was done to commemorate those involved in the creation of the arch...

And on the side was another relief of structures that the arch is higher than...

There was also a museum!  (big place!)

Afterwards we strolled around the area...
   They also have helicopter tours...

Check out the hairdo and shoes on the horse!

Decided to drive around for a while...

Love cobblestone!

Great old building!                                             Love the windows!

The area was mostly abandoned.
It must have been nice once...

We decided to drive along the riverfront and saw...
                                                                                  ...a river otter!!

...a mosaic...

...beautiful murals...

...and graffiti!

We drove along the river "flood wall" and found out later on google that there was 3 miles of it!  Learned that when you graffiti your name, it's called tagging.  It was very colorful!

150 graffiti artists were just here in June to update and fix up the wall...
...some had gone on to art school.  Pretty neat.

So in a few hours, we had a whirlwind tour of famous and less famous areas of St. Louis. And had a grand time of it!
